Departments/Categories
The terms Departments and Categories are
interchangeable in the site. Setting up departments is one of the most important
aspects of planning your online shopping site. Most users of your
catalog will use the department/sub-department list to navigate through
your products. Because of this, you should think about your departments
like your customers think about your products to make it as easy as
possible for the customer to navigate your catalog. From the Departments link in the
administration navigation bar you are delivered the Top Level
Department List. This can also be called the Major
Department List. This is a list of the top level departments in
your site. There is no limit to the number of departments you can have
in your site. However, there is a practical limit of the number of
departments a user will work through. We have limited the department
list to two levels for this reason. Site users tend to get lost if they
have to drill down more than two levels to get to a product list. Add New Major Department General Department Information - All
departments are displayed in the site by the Display Order No.
To insure that you have room to expand it is suggested that you start
your Display Order Numbers at 10000 and place your major
departments at least 1000 apart. This will allow you room to add
departments in the future with our renumbering your display order. For instance if Department 1 is set to 10000 and
department 2 is set to 11000, you have ample room between the numbers to
add other major and sub- departments. Example: Custom Attribute Fields - Custom attribute
fields are available for each unique category. These fields allow you to
enter custom search criteria to build the Power Search
feature of the catalog. When you enter one or more custom
attributes in a department you will be presented with that
attribute as an additional informational field in the products data
entry area. When you implement the Power Search attribute
of the site the user will have an option of searching by any or all of
the custom attributes for each category. As an example, if you are selling autos you might
enter make, model, engine, transmission, year and color as attributes.
The user would then have access to the Power Search
feature which would let them search by any or all of the criteria. If you are not going to use the Power Search
feature, adding category attributes is un-necessary. Display Order No: - Categories are
displayed in the order of the Display Order No. throughout the
site. Name: - The name that will be displayed
for each category. Description: - A short description used
for internal purposes only. Image Name: - If you use an image for
each category, enter the button name for this category here. It must
include the .gif or .jpg extension. Images will need to be loaded in the
_sitefiles/images folder on your site. Show on navigation bar: - Checking this
box will allow the category to show in the category list on all pages.
Normally, on the opening page only the major departments show on the
department list. When you click a major department all sub-departments
for that department also show. Clicking this box will force
sub-departments to show all the time. It is recommended that only major
departments be checked. Department Heading: - This entry can
contain HTML and displays at the top of the page when this category is
chosen from the category list. This can contain as little as a text
heading or it can contain HTML for images and links. Category Attributes: LetMeShop includes a highly detailed
search capability, Power Search. This feature uses the category
attributes to build a search based on up to 10 custom attributes for
each category/sub-category. For instance, if you have a catalog of autos, you could build a
custom attribute list for cars, trucks, etc. These attributes might be: Each product you enter would then contain data entry fields for each
of these attributes. Power search uses these data fields to dynamically
build a search engine. Attributes are unique to each category /
sub-category.
