The site layout determines how the page will be displayed in your site.
There are five basic areas of your catalog page.
- Header... This area is generally used as the primary identifying
area of your website. It may contain your logo, an identifying
slogan, images, artwork...anything that will help identify this site
as yours. In some cases it may contain an email link or a phone
number to contact.
- Body... This area will contain the section, page, news, events,
forms, etc. you have defined in your site. Everything in this area
is controlled by the information you enter in the administration
database.
- Left Navigation Bar / Right Navigation Bar... These two areas may
or may not be used based on the layout you choose.
- Footer...This area generally contains some basic
information...business name, address, phone, email, etc. It may also
contain links to other sites or specific areas within your site.

As the image above illustrates, your choices are relatively simple.
However, there is a little work to do here. Your first step is to choose
the layout you want to use.
First, choose the layout you want to use. You have eight choices...
check the radio button beside the layout of your choice.
Here comes the math... All sizes for a website are determined by
the minimum screen resolution you want to support. Screen
resolution is set on the individual users computer. (You can find your
settings under Start / Settings / Control Panel / Display /
Settings. The numbers under the Screen Area is your screen
resolution. (see the red shaded area below) The first number indicates
the maximum number of pixels your monitor will display in width. The
second is the maximum pixels in height... regardless of the size of
your monitor. A 21" monitor set to a resolution of 800 by 600
will only display 800 pixels in width of information.

Many computer owners (about 25%) still use a screen
resolution of 800 pixels wide by 600 pixels tall. If you set your page
width to greater than 760 pixels (800 pixel screen width minus 40
pixels width for the scroll bar on the right of the browser window)
the user will have to scroll left and right to see all of your page.
People who use a resolution smaller than your page width will miss a
lot of the content on your site...
So... keep your website page width to no more than 760 pixels.
That said...
- First, choose the width (in pixels) you want your web page to
be. In most cases you will want to keep the "Page Width"
to 760 pixels.
- If you intend to use a left navigation bar choose the width in
pixels you want for the left navigation bar.
- Same goes for the right navigation bar.
Now the math... You now need to determine the width of the
"body" of the page based on your other choices. For
instance...
If you chose the top left style... you are not using a right
navigation bar.
Page width = 760
Left navigation bar width = 180
The body width would be 760 - 180... or 580 pixels.
If you choose the bottom left style... using a left and a right
navigation bar.
Page width = 760
Left navigation bar width = 160
Right navigation bar width = 160
Body width = 760 - 360 (width of both navigation bars)
or 440 pixels.
Header height should be set to the maximum height of your header
file in pixels.
Enter the appropriate numbers and click the Save Template
button.
Now the good news... You don't have to get it perfect the first time.
After you enter the numbers and save the template go look at the site.
If it needs adjusting, make your changes and save it again.
